About That Princess Leia Sunbathing Photo
Oh, I’m sure you saw that photo. It was tearing up the internets this past week: the snapshot of Carrie Fisher, in Princess Leia metal bikini-wear, sunbathing with her identically clad stunt double while on set in Arizona for Return of the Jedi.
It really started spreading once Gizmodo posted it, and could be found on JWZ, Boingboing.net, Buzzfeed.com,and theforce.net. It was when the Daily Mail got a hold of the story, though, that it took a peculiar turn.
Catch that wrinkle? The “pictures have just been leaked onto the internet, more than 20 years since they were taken.” That definitely makes the story even sexier, which, come on, this is a story that hardly needs it. As exciting as the idea of leaked photos is, it’s not entirely accurate. In fact, we can offer you a “top secret” way to uncover this and even more “leaked photos.”
Step 1. Get the 2004 Star Wars Trilogy DVD boxed set. Odds are, you own it. Throw in Disc 4, the Bonus Materials. Navigate to “Video Games and Still Galleries.”

Step 2. Now, go to “Exclusive Production Photos.”

Step 3. Almost there. “View Return of the Jedi photos.

Step 4. Okay. Now thumb forward about 30 or so images and, presto! “Leaked image!”

A wise blogger once wrote, “the Internet has a collective memory of a goldfish for stuff like this.” Hard to argue that point, but we know Star Wars fans are more observant than that! Heck, we’re willing to bet that some of you even remembered that a variation of this photo was made publicly available before the 2004 DVD release. In June of 2003, StarWars.com posted this snapshot. We’re certain it’s been burned into the minds of more than one fanboy.

Kid’s Stormtrooper Costume Craft

Using foam sheets, glue, Velcro strips, spray paint and a few other inexpensive items you can make these impressive stormtrooper costumes for your little ones, just like this crafty fan did.
This is my cheap attempt at stormtrooper costumes for my 4 and 6 year -olds. It’s made to be lightweight and flexible for comfort but still hold true to the movie armor and look cooler than the store-bought stuff out there. Because of the materials used, these costumes won’t hold up to rough play or prolonged wear. Actually, they got pretty beat up after simply trick or treating.
Within the steps I’ll tell you how I did certain things and what I would do differently. My son’s costume was my first attempt and spent about 18 hours on it, not including drying time for paint and glue.
My daughter’s costume took less time because I based it on my son’s templates just smaller and I gave it a little less detail (and I was less careful with cutting and gluing). Anyway, hope you find the instructions helpful. The result was a ton of fun and the kids got a lot of attention. Cheers!

Adorkable AT-AT Dog Costume!

This may just be the happiest little AT-AT ever. A crafty fan made this adorkable costume for his little dog and then shot a video of him wagging his tale to the Imperial theme. Cute overload!
I made this for my Mini-Pinscher for Halloween as he has about the same size and profile as an AT-AT. It is made out of picture backing board, hot glue, a sharpie, pillow stuffing, and my skin — I used a real scalpel to cut it out, plus the hot glue took a chunk of skin off as well.

Verizon Droid Phone vs. C-3PO

You’ve probably already seen the commercial for Verizon’s new phone Droid — as well as the fan spoof iDon’t Care. But how would the Droid phone measure up against a Star Wars droid?
Josh Wigler at MTV Movies Blog takes a closer look at why owning an actual droid from Star Wars would be so much cooler than Verizon’s Droid phone.
The Verizon Droid can connect to the Internet, which gives you access to a whole host of useful information from around the globe. But with your very own 3PO model, you could not only access all of that same information, you’d also have better storage space thanks to the droid’s AA-1 VerboBrain. In some cases, you’d even be able to take advantage of the droid’s TranLang III Communicator module, which allows for fluency in six million different forms of communication. If that feature doesn’t speak your language, I don’t know what will.
Even if the Verizon Droid doesn’t have the same storage space as a 3PO model, it certainly has more room than most affordable cellular devices on the market. What it most assuredly does not have, however, is a hidden lightsaber compartment with ejector like the R2-series astromech droid. That feature really comes in handy, particularly when you’re staring down into the sandy maw of a Sarlacc Pit.
For the sake of argument, let’s suppose that the Verizon Droid does have space for a hidden lightsaber compartment. It still wouldn’t beat out robot assassin IG-88, one of the galaxy’s single-greatest cybernetic bounty hunters. Most of us aren’t looking to contract out a mercenary — let alone a robotic one — but if ever the situation arises where somebody really grinds your gears, wouldn’t you at least want the option of a self-aware, rail-thin android killer at your disposal? It’s a fair question worth mulling over.

Is The Verizon Droid The Droid You’re Looking For… Or One Of These Star Wars Droids Instead?

Star Wars Teaches Us About Career Management

The next time you want to chat with your boss about getting raise, or you need to ask a co-worker to stop screaming at you about lost memos, perhaps you should channel your inner Jedi Master or Sith Lord.

File Under: Human Capital Management; Succession Planning
Star Wars Moment: The Jedi Counsel assigns an impressionable and unstable Anakin Skywalker, who is supposed to bring balance to the Force, peace to the galaxy, etc., to serve as the “personal representative” for Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to the Jedi Council. Never mind that Palpatine makes most Jedi Knights uneasy and fear for the future of the Galactic Republic.
Real-World Lesson: Not the wisest idea to allow the “chosen one” and the best hope for the future of your company to be mentored or influenced by an individual you don’t fully trust.“Commander, tear this ship apart until you’ve found those plans!” -Darth Vader
File Under: Project Management; Risk Management
Star Wars Moment: Rebels are able to acquire a secret set of plans to the Empire’s Death Star, and eventually exploit a weakness and destroy the moon-size battle station.

Let the Wookiee Pumpkin Win!

Interview by Bonnie Burton
Photos by Raphael Isaacs
This Halloween fans everywhere carved and transformed ordinary pumpkins into their favorite Star Wars characters. But instead of cutting up the Great Pumpkin, crafty fans Raphael Isaacs and his wife Jennifer made this Wookiee-tastic pumpkin for a contest — which, of course, they won!
Starwars.com chats with Raphael about his adorkable pumpkin tribute to Chewbacca with tips for you crafty fans.
Why did you decide to make this pumpkin in a non-traditional way?
We were determined to make the pumpkin look as Chewbacca-like as possible, which as everyone knows requires copious amounts of fur. Also, with the right tools, covering a pumpkin in fur is a lot easier than carving it.
What materials did you use?
Pumpkin, various types of faux fur, glue gun, Sculpey, aluminum foil, cardboard, satin ribbon, and googley eyes.
How did you and your wife make this Wookiee-tastic pumpkin?
We first created sectional templates of the pumpkin (approx. 5) with plastic wrap. We then used those templates to cut out corresponding sections of fur. This was tricky, since the templates had to be reversed in order for the fur sections to be placed back in their correct positions on the pumpkin. Using a hot glue gun, we applied the furry sections one at a time, making sure there were no orange spots poking out.

Once the pumpkin was adequately furry-fied, we moved on to create Chewy’s signature utility belt. For this we used cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil, a brown satin ribbon, and the ever-useful hot glue gun. Once the belt was in place and attached to the pumpkin with (you guessed it) hot glue, we were able to estimate the location and size of Chewy’s face.

The eyes were googley eyes to which we attached scraps of leftover fur, and the nose and mouth were skillfully crafted out of Sculpey — a type of modeling clay you can bake. Once those were formed and baked to a crisp, we painted them using a picture we found on the internet as a guide.

These were then applied with….wait for it….hot glue. In order to ensure people knew who Chewy was (although anyone who couldn’t figure it out has “issues”) we printed out a color picture of Han and glued him to a piece of cardboard. Ta-da! The team was back together.

Star Wars Halloween at the White House

(AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)
This Halloween, President Obama and the First Lady hung out with Chewbacca, Ahsoka Tano, and the 501st stormtroopers as they handed out candy to 2,000 trick-or-treaters and military families who were invited to the festive party.
An odd cast of figures wandered around the North Lawn, including skeletons playing musical instruments, walking trees and Star Wars characters.
The president, dressed in casual clothes, was one of the few not in costume. Even Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, was dressed as Darth Vader, the Star Wars villain.

Snapshots from the Today Show’s Halloween Fun
Here are some cell phone snaps from this morning’s Star Wars invasion of the Today show.

Today Show’s Star Wars Trick or Treat

Each year, the anchors of the TODAY Show have fun as Halloween approaches by dressing in costume. This morning, with the help of Lucasfilm, Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Meredith Viera, Hoda Kotb and company showed up decked out in classic Star Wars outfits. After conferring with Darth Vader via hologram, Roker showed up dressed as Han Solo with Chewbacca in tow. Matt arrived via X-wing as Luke Skywalker. Hoda, fittingly, arrived as Yoda. Kathie Lee Gifford had R2-D2 as her sidekick since she was dressed up as C-3PO. Ann Curry was revealed to be hidden beneath Darth Vader’s mask. Appearing as royalty were Natalie Morales as Queen Amidala and Meredith Vieira as Princess Leia. The hosts then competed in a game of “Jedi Jeopardy,” where the anchors tested their Star Wars trivia knowledge. See it online here. Read the Today Show’s story here.

Meanwhile, on the TODAY show website, there are exclusive interview clips with Supervising Director of The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni. He discusses working with George Lucas on the series, and introduces Barriss Offee to series, a Jedi character briefly glimpsed in the prequel movies who gets her own spotlight on The Clone Wars. Also don’t forget to check out the Al-bot, a droid custom designed by Lucasfilm Animation based on Al Roker, as well as Roker’s visit behind-the-scenes at ILM. Check out more snapshots here.
Hipster Han & Leia Costumes

Still looking for a the perfect Star Wars costume for Halloween? Why not make your own using clothing best worn by hipsters and win some dough at the same time?
Between October 14, 2009 and November 6, 2009, American Apparel is asking their customers to submit photos of themselves in costume. The catch is this: the outfit should feature at least one American Apparel product, and it must be reasonably prominent. They have to be able to see it, so undies won’t count unless they’re worn on the outside, superhero-style.
Here’s an entry from Bert & Shelly from California.
Han is wearing an Interlock Running Short in navy/red and the sheer rib 3/4 sleeve v-neck in white.
Leia is wearing a modified Baby Rib Bikini Bra in brown.
Gun, vest and loincloth are homemade.

Darth Vader Paper Lantern Craft

Star Wars artist and crafty gal Cynthia Narcisi made this awesome Darth Vader Paper Lantern to help make your Halloween extra-spooky.
IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTION!!! Please ONLY use a candle votive inside a glass jar so that glass prevents the candle from getting too close to the paper! Or better yet, a glow stick instead! Vader would be most displeased if you didn’t!

Director Richard Kelly Visits Skywalker

The week director Richard Kelly visited Skywalker, as well as the Lucasfilm-ILM San Francisco campus, to screen his latest film The Box, as well as indulge us as we (me included) asked uber-geeky questions about his new movie, his breakout hit Donnie Darko and about filmmaking in general.
Richard blogged about his visit on the MTV Movies Blog:
The good people of Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light & Magic hosted a screening of The Box an invited me to stay at the legendary Lucas ranch for the night and tour the facilities.
The property itself is everything a fanboy could dream and more – as an alumni of USC and an acolyte in the church of Lucas – I was speechless when I was granted access to the Sergei Eisenstein apartment, a spacious lodge with a vaulted ceiling and fireplace.
It was then on to visit the wonderful folks at ILM in San Francisco. We did a post-screening discussion on The Box (opening November 6th!) which was moderated by Kate Shaw – Director of Training and Education – who asked a series of insightful and thoughtful questions about the film.
It was an honor to be among fellow artists and technicians who appreciate the art of science-fiction and open to exploring the themes of the film. I have to say it was probably my favorite Q+A that I have ever done.

Taylor Swift the Wookiee?

While some girls would rather kiss a Wookiee, others would prefer to BE a one. Country-pop singer Taylor Swift says her favorite Halloween costume was dressing up as Chewbacca.
Taylor shared, “I think my most memorable Halloween costume was last year’s Halloween costume. My best friend Abigail and I have always been sort of anti-teeny-tiny, little costumes and so last year, Abigail and I dressed up as twin Chewbaccas, which was an actual Halloween costume.”
Taylor explained her choice in the out-there costume, saying, “It was really, really wonderful. I just am never going to forget it. There was lots of Chewbacca noises being made.

Carving Yoda for Halloween

Texan artist Scott Cummins celebrates Halloween by creating amazingly intricate 3-D versions of famous faces — including Yoda — on pumpkins.
Using photographs as a reference he then transforms each squash with tools ranging from craft knives to spoons and potato peelers. The finished product is then illuminated with a 30 watt bulb, instead of the traditional candle, to reveal the sculpture in all its glory.
Star Wars‘ Yoda, Tubaka and a stormtrooper are just a few of the film characters in Mr Cummins’ expansive collection.
“As one might expect, there is also a lot of appeal with the Star Wars-inspired carvings. I did Star Wars because it is so popular with so many people like me who had grown up watching the movie.”

Star Wars Easter Eggs in Clone Wars

Watch The Clone Wars carefully and you might catch quite a few shout-outs to the Star Wars films in various allusions and Easter eggs.
Wired’s GeekDad Blog points out a few:
- In a gambit later used by Han Solo and Luke Skywalker aboard the first dreaded Death Star, Cad Bane disguises himself in trooper armor to escape notice and slip past security.
- When Admiral Yularen says “No! Lock them all down, hurry!” it is a reference to C-3PO’s line in A New Hope, as he frantically admonishes R2-D2 to shut down the trash compactors aboard the Death Star.
- The holographic mobile hovering over the Gungan toddler’s crib includes a colo clawfish, an opee sea killer and a sando aqua monster, the three massive underwater beasts that attack Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon’s submarine in The Phantom Menace.

Dead Tauntaun Wedding Cake!

(501st Great Lakes Garrison troopers – Jon Leopold and Craig Provine guard the Tauntaun cake!)
(Photos by mod4)
Star Wars artist Chris Trevas let us know of this glorious Tauntaun cake for his wedding!
Julie and I had Courtney Clark from Cake Nouveau of Food Network Challenge (and TLC Ultimate Cake-Off) fame do our wedding cakes including a special cake request from me — Luke Skywalker stuffed inside a dead Tauntaun!

It was certainly one of the talks of the wedding evening. Older relatives were a bit confused, but the kids and our friends loved it!

Courtney did an amazing job! My wife Julie and I are big Food Network nerds so we were geeked to hire her.
As further proof of what cake nerds we are, my only big non-Star Wars job I did last year was artwork for the Ace of Cakes book just released this month.
